Kokoda Track Treks: FAQ

ARE THERE LEACHES?

Yes. In 17 trips over the Track, I have only had 2 leaches. I have had more than this on one training walk in Cairns. Including all other people, I am not aware of more than about 6 leaches?

ARE THERE MOSQUITOES?

Yes. There are more in the lower sections of the Track and certainly in Kokoda. We strongly recommend that you bring insect repellent and that everybody takes anti-malaria medicines. See your doctor about this.

WHAT BOOTS DO YOU RECOMMEND?

Many of our trekkers have had a variety of boots all different brands. Ensure that when you buy your boots, go to any adventure store and have them properly fitted. Ask the store assistant which they recommend. We recommend boots that cover your ankles to provide you with better support but it also does not allow as much mud in. In the past, we have used Scarpa and have found them to be very good.

DO YOU RECOMMEND HIKING STICKS?

We strongly recommend two sticks. Everybody who has taken this advise has agreed with this policy. These can be purchased at any adventure shop or on eBay for as little as $20.

IS THERE ANYWHERE IN PORT MORESBY WHERE I CAN LEAVE PERSONAL GEAR?

No. When we leave Cairns we are ready to go straight out onto the Track. Any equipment can be left in Cairns either at your accommodation or at the Hains’s residence.

CAN I EXTEND MY STAY IN PNG?

Yes. Some people wish to stay and go diving for example. We need to know prior to the purchase of the international ticket about this. Recently people stayed and went diving at Tuffi. I have also been approached about a trip to the battle sites at Milne Bay and a stay at Treetops Lodge.

IS THERE A NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT?

Any amount not refunded would be to recover outlays such as airfares. In most cases, the airlines will give a credit against a future flight. There are no refunds after the trek begins. Any loss here is recoverable from insurance.

HOW BIG ARE THE GROUPS.

We keep the groups small. Our budget is based on eight people with a maximum twelve to fourteen. The maximum number of porters is the number of trekkers plus two. This will be less if people carry their own pack.

HOW HEAVY ARE THE TENTS AND FOOD?

The tents weigh about 2.2kgs. The food (14 meals) weighs about 1.5kgs.

DO I NEED A VISA?

Yes. This must be obtained in Australia as early as possible. This be obtained before departure.

HOW OFTEN ARE THE TREKS?

We can go as often as demand requires. We normally place surnames on the web against a date which normally other people will add their names. Some people like a closed group which is fine provided there are eight people.
